Gov. Newsom Calls on Oakland Leadership to Reconsider Pursuit Restriction Policy

Repost, Oakland Chamber of Commerce - [Last week], Governor Gavin Newsom sent a letter to Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao, the Oakland City Council and the Oakland Police Commission urging officials to reconsider the Oakland Police Department's (OPD) policy that restricts law enforcement’s ability to police criminal activity by prohibiting pursuit of suspects. The Governor’s letter follows his recent increase of the California Highway Patrol in the city, which is conducting ongoing surge operations. Although he is mindful of the sensitivity of vehicle pursuits, the Governor suggests any policy must be clear-eyed, weighing the risks and benefits involved particularly given that Oakland's pursuit policy is an outlier for California's law enforcement agencies.
