STEP 1: GETTING STARTED
Implementing a Recycling Program at Your Building
1. Recycling Goals & Benefits
Alameda County has a countywide goal of 75% waste diversion from County landfills by the year 2010. A few cities, such as Oakland and Berkeley, are going a step further and establishing “zero waste” goals.
The County is well on its way to achieving these goals and is proud to report a 59% recycling rate in 2004. This would not have been possible without the dedication and participation of the County’s commercial sector and the leadership and commitment of proactive business organizations such as BOMA.
Getting to the next diversion level is a priority and a challenge for the East Bay that can only be achieved through continued participation and expansion of recycling programs in our business community. The resources contained in this Chapter of the Environment Guide are designed to help all of us meet that challenge.
Many businesses can save money on avoided disposal costs by setting up a recycling collection program and transferring materials from the garbage to recycling. Recycling conserves natural resources, energy, water, and landfill space and also reduces pollution and green-house gas emissions.
2. StopWaste Business Efficiency Awards
The StopWaste Partnership sponsors an annual awards program to recognize businesses in Alameda County who have achieved significant results in reducing solid waste and whose leadership, policies and programs demonstrate a commitment to environmentally sustainable practices. With a comprehensive recycling program at your facility, you may qualify for a StopWaste Business Efficiency Award.
3. Free Technical Assistance
